MTE 2021 INDEPENDENT AWARDS COMMITTEES

Independent Awards Committees will identify and invite judges and oversee the judging process of all entries.  There will be three Awards Committees at MTE 2020 :

  • Invention & Innovation Awards Committee & Social Innovation Asia Awards Committee chaired by Professor Datuk Wira Dr. Raha Binti Abdul Rahim, Vice Chancellor of Universiti  Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTEM).
  • Asian Youth Innovation Awards Committee will be chaired by Prof. Dato’ Dr. Noraini Idris, Chairperson, National STEM Movement & President, IMT-GT Uninet STEM.
  • Public Service Innovation Awards will be chaired by En. Hussein Mohd Ariff, President of Malaysia Association of Creativity and Innovation (MACRI) Malaysia.

ROLE OF THE AWARDS CHAIRPERSON

The Awards Chair and its Committee will select lead judges and judges from both Industry and Academia, who are the subject matter experts in the categories that they will be judging. The deliberations of the Awards Committee will be confidential and independent of outside influences.

Professor Datuk Wira Dr. Raha Binti Abdul Rahim,
Vice Chancellor of Universiti  Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTEM)

Raha graduated with a Degree in Microbiology from Oklahoma State University, USA and proceeded to do her MS degree at the University of Oklahoma. She joined Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in June 1991 as a tutor at the Department of Biotechnology and completed her PhD in Molecular Genetics at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow.

Her main research interest is the development of lactic acid bacteria for delivery of useful proteins; plasmid biology, vaccine delivery and cell factory systems of lactic acid bacteria. She is also involved in other research including identification of genetic markers and authentication of halal products by molecular methods. She has supervised and co-supervised more than 50 post-graduate students, published more than 130 papers in peer-reviewed journals and filed several Intellectual Property rights.

She is also a consultant to several government agencies and biotech-related industries. Raha has held several administrative post at UPM; as the Director of UPM’s Research Management Center, Deputy Dean of Research at the Faculty of BioTech, UPM’s Biosafety Chair for Genetically Modified Organisms, Head of the Cell and Molecular Biology Department and Coordinator of the Culture Collection Unit, IBS, UPM.

Raha is currently the President of the Malaysian Society of Lactic Acid Bacteria. She was a past President of the Malaysian Society for Microbiology and is a continuing EXCO member. She is also affiliated to several other professional societies such as the Malaysian Society for Molecular Biology and Biotechnology and the Malaysian Genetics Society. At the international stage, she is a member of the American Society for Microbiology and the Sec-general to the Asian Federation of Societies for Lactic Acid Bacteria.

Raha held the post of Director at the Institution of Higher Education Excellence Planning Division, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education (MoE) Malaysia. She was in-charge of the overall Innovation Ecosystem as pledged in Shift 7 of the Higher Education Blueprint 2015-2025. Her division specifically managed MoE’s research & development programs (Research Universities, Higher Institutions’ Centers of Excellence, FRGS), research grants and projects, R&D databases (MyRA and MyGRANTS), coordinated matching international and industrial grants (MyPAIR) and facilitated activities relating to the promotion of R&D products from the Institutions of Higher Learning, Malaysia.

Raha is currently the fourth Vice Chancellor of Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM).

Professor Dato’ Dr. Noraini Idris

Chairperson, National STEM Movement & President, IMT-GT Uninet STEM

Professor Dato’ Dr. Noraini Idris is an educator, consultant, and distinguished mathematic educator.  She gained her PhD from The Ohio State University, USA and has been entrusted with the position of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research & Innovation) at Sultan Idris Education University as well as well as Dean of the Faculty of Education at University of Malaya.  She published a variety of national and international academics publications to her credit and is a Fulbright Research Fellow.  Subsequently, she presented papers both nationally and internationally and conducted several researches with UNESCO, the British Council, Australian Universities – such as Melbourne, Sydney and the Sumitomo, Japan. 

Her research areas are mathematics education, teacher education, computer-assisted assessment, higher education, and comparative education.  She has been the principal investigator for a government-funded research on Development of A Teacher Education Model for Preparing Quality Teachers for The Future and Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM).  She is an active research member on Classroom for Teaching and Learning of Mathematics research team comprises of USA, Germany, Italy, Spain, and China.  She is also an International Editorial Advisor/Reviewer for Journal of Mathematics Education, USA and Research Academic Journal, USA. 

Among her distinctions are the Distinguished Diversity Enhancement Awards- the only Asian recipient for the project on Minority Young Scholars Project and the Graduate Research Alumni Student Award from Ohio State University, a Gold Medal for ITEX (Geneva, 2005) and Best Award at MTE 2007, 2009 on designing assessment system for school-based assessment and higher education on Gold Medal at ITEX 2011, 2013, 2014 for designing Module of Teacher Education. Most recently, she has been awarded the Leadership STEM 2018 from the Japan Intellectual Property Association (JIPA), Visionary Leadership Category from the International Education Award 2018 and Outstanding and Excellent Leadership in STEM, Republic of Croatia 2019.

En. Hussein Mohd Ariff
President of Malaysia Association of Creativity and Innovation (MACRI) Malaysia

Hussein Mohd Ariff, President of the Malaysian Association of Creativity and Innovation (MACRI) for the current term of 2018-2020, has been involved in the field of innovation for more than 20 years.

From retail to training and consultancy and recipient of various commercialisation grants, Hussein has a passion for challenging boundaries in promoting and nurturing creative and innovative thinking.

As the PSIA Awards Committee Chairperson, he brings with him over 10 years experience of evaluating hundreds of innovation projects, especially from the public sector.
